In many cases self-harm is simply a means of suppressing negative emotional feelings (by replacing them with negative physical feelings), by learning to stop working against your emotions and instead focusing on trying to accept them as something totally natural and, although sometimes painful, fundamentally informative for your well-being you can open up alot of mental space which can make it easier to overcome self-harm.
