While self-harm (and a great many other things) can be hard to recognize as truly bad for you until a friend points it out, in general it is a good idea in life to make sure that any advice you get is based in concern for you and that you are not being guided by other people’s issues. If something (that doesn’t carry unnecessary risks) can help you to overcome your reliance on self-harm you should not give it up merely because people in your life frown on it.
