Many psychologists suspect that, instead of being a part of some form of survival plan, the seemingly ‘beneficial-on-the-surface’ effects of self-harm are derived from a flaw in natural design of the brains of many intelligent animals which many species, including humans, are unfortunately smart enough to exploit. Interestingly however humans do not appear to be the only species capable of realising the ill-effects later on.
