Research suggests that self-harm is most common among people whose experiences are more difficult to cope with than they have the capacity to otherwise process. This includes those who have endured serious issues or who have not previously been given the chance to develop their emotional defences. However it seems there are also people naturally inclined to self-harm due to other pre-existant issues.
