There are four major known reasons to self harm; firstly a negative feelings towards oneself, secondly a sense of needing to expell an inner badness, thirdly to compensate for strong feelings such as depression or anger (or numbness), or fourthly and lastly addiction. These can be found in the same subject, however they are not always. Addiction is interesting as it is not able to trigger the first incident of self harm under ordinary circumstances.
