Look into things that qualify people as ‘less fortunate’. It may seem cliche given that John Q. Public can (perhaps unintentionally annoyingly) suggest you compare your life to those of such unfortunate people when you are feeling down, but understanding their issues and doing some small things to help them can quite often increase your sense of self worth and even make you feel happier. As a result by doing good deeds like that you can considerably reduce your urge to self harm.
