If you self harm due to feelings of inadequacy then write out a list of skills you possess and concentrate your efforts and attention on becoming slightly better. This will both help to combat the original source of your self harm dependency and help provide you with a distraction that will keep your mind away from thoughts of it, thus combating its addictive qualities. Remember this does not mean taking on a large project which can cause you frustration, it means setting lots of little targets you can play with for fun.
